Travelogue: Great Smoky Mountain National Park – Abrams Falls

Day 1 itinerary:

Hike Abrams Falls (allow 1hr 15min of driving each way from the Gatlinburg – National Park entrance)

Stroll around Gatlinburg shops

Dinner at the cabin

Today was Day 1 of our Gatlinburg/Great Smoky Mountain vacation. When planning this trip we decided that we wanted to take our 7 year old boys on a hike – one that their little legs could manage, but one that would also be strenuous enough to make them work hard. The hike to Abrams Falls was perfect. The round trip mileage was 5 miles and there were 3 fairly steep climbs to make it a decently tough hike for our young family. The area surrounding the waterfall provided plenty of perfect picnic spots and the view of the waterfall was stunning. The waterfall is not super high, but the volume of water cascading from the falls was impressive. The only negative about this hike is that it is located in the Cades Cove area which is quite a drive from Gatlinburg. It took us about 1.5 hours to get there from our Gatlinburg cabin. We all agreed, however, that this beautiful hike was well worth the drive.
